Two masterplans are being developed in tandem for the regeneration of Scotswood in Newcastle. New Norm focuses on effecting a physical transformation and New Topia focuses on a cultural transformation. The ultimate aim is the establishment of a sustainable New Neighbourhood for Scotswood.
Once a thriving residential and industrial quarter of Newcastle (England), Scotswood is archetypal of a post-industrial city. Today it is defined by its diminished population and industry and its voided heartland. Once dense with houses and a vibrant community, much of Scotswood is now an open waste ground.
As a vehicle for kick-starting the regeneration of this heartland and transforming its identity, an international housing expo is being developed, lead by Newcastle City Council. This expo showcases the first three hundred of several thousand new houses for the area.
Newcastle City Council has commissioned a masterplan from Civic Works to be drawn up in tandem with a physical masterplan by Urban Initiatives. This cultural masterplan is called New Topia and is a framework for how a cultural transformation can be effected in Scotswood by way of the physical regeneration project for a housing expo.
